HewTech Electronics is offering A POLARFIRE Replacement FIREPLUG CDI for the 73~78 Ski-Doo & Moto-Ski’s ignitions.
The CDI redesign using the single-coil was the result of issues found on 77/78 models. We’ve determined the cause and changed the CDI design to cover all PolarFire years from 73-78 models. We also took the opportunity to integrate a single-coil design which increased the quality as well as the spark energy output!
The Single-Coil model includes 2 spark plug wires (plug wires can go to either cylinder).
CDI mounts in original factory location using original factory connector.
No splicing, alternate mounting or re-wiring necessary.
FIREPLUG includes a separate BLACK/WHITE kill-switch wire for standard 2-wire tether connections (ground to stop spark). Leave it unconnected if using the original 3-wire kill or key switch—no extra wiring needed.
NOTE: Suggest using resistor BR8ES-BR9ES spark plugs. This will extend the life of the coil, also some Digital tach’s require the use of a BR-resistor plugs to eliminate erratic display operation due to EMI interference.
POLARFIREPLUG CDI AVAILABLE FOR 73~78 ROTAX:
- 1973~1975 TNT-F/A & 75 Everest
- 1975 RV245
- 1976 RV250 & RV340 (RV345)
- 1977 RV340
- 1978 RV/Sonic models that use PolarFire CDI
Uses original Factory 3-wire AND/OR attach any standard 2-wire kill-switch!
TECHNICAL PROBLEMS
STILL NO-SPARK?
Verify that the chassis to engine (bonding) wire is connected & in good condition and CDI is mounted solid to chassis bracket (DO NOT RUBBER ISOLATE THE MOUNTING OF THE CDI).
NOTE: The stock CDI may operate without this bonding wire, since it does not require the aluminum case to be connected to common ground.
NOTE: The Fireplug CDI / Coil requires the CDI to be mounted directly to the Chassis bracket & Engine grounded to Chassis for correct operation.
The brown wire from the connector grounds internally to the CDI stator plate and engine crankcase. Over time, it can break, corrode, or develop poor connections at other junctions. Verify that the brown wire provides a solid ground path from the engine, through the harness, to the CDI by checking continuity with an ohmmeter.
Disconnect kill-switch harness, often times the kill switch & key-switch fail & short out the CDI box.
Verify Stator & Trigger resistance:
315-335 ohm Stator (RED to Brown)
50~60-ohm triggers (striped wires).
