An issue with the 12V battery and electric-start feature has resulted in the destruction of an excessive number of CDI boxes. Notably, no such issues arise if the 12V battery is not installed and only the recoil is used for starting.

The problem seems to be inherent to the stator, electric-start system, 12V charging system, or the external rectifiers. The 12V battery current somehow routes through the CDI, causing internal damage.

Analysis has shown that if the 12V battery is removed and only the recoil is used for starting, the CDI remains undamaged. However, if the battery is installed, the CDI will sustain damage and cease to generate a spark after just a few cycles using the electric start.

Replacing these severely damaged Fireplug CDIs under warranty has become increasingly costly due to the faulty design of the electrical system. To continue offering the Harley Fireplug CDI, the responsibility for ensuring proper operation must lie with the owner.

NOTE: You must return your original plug with about 8″ of cable for Re-Fit to FIREPLUG CDI.  Original plug is not longer available.  Your old plug will be re-attached to the FIREPLUG CDI so everything connects to the factory harness.

FIREPLUG CDI:
HewTech Electronics LLC has redesigned the 1972~1975 Harley Davidson Snowmobile FIREPLUG CDI box.

This particular CDI replacement has not been available, leaving many Harley owners without a source. We have taken many telephone calls & e-mails requesting the availability of this CDI.

The FIREPLUG CDI mounts in the factory location.

NOTE: The rubber connector PLUG is not available, we will need your existing PLUG core with a few inches of wire attached. This will be re-connected to the new FIREPLUG CDI to allow connection to your factory harness.

Without this plug, the only other option is to splice the existing wires into your existing harness. The FIREPLUG CDI unit is supplied with mounting hardware.
